2-Ingredient Easy Flax Bar / Flax Burfi / Flax Squares

Course: bars, Breakfast
Cuisine: American, Indian
Keyword: barfi, burfi
Servings: 4 people
Author: Swetha Sivakumar
  • 1 cup Flaxmeal (I used golden, brown is fine too)
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • Elaichi powder (for flavoring)
  • Neutral Oil (for greasing the plate)
  1. Add water and sugar to pan, bring to boil.

  2. Once the big bubbles break off and just small bubbles remain (single string consistency), add the flax meal and vigorously stir.

  3. Continue stirring on heat, until the flax move together in 1 lump. They will not stick to the sides of the pan anymore. Empty the mixture to a greased plate

  4. Flatten with damp hand, score immediately. Let it cool, then remove the pieces. Serve!!

Recipe Notes

Tip  ->> If you have whole flax, grind 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp whole flax to get 1 cup flax meal.

2 ways you could mess up the recipe:

  1. If you let the water-sugar mixture get too hot and too crystalline, then the flax will not dissolve into the syrup, it will become a powdery mix. No way to save it...but it makes for a delicious oatmeal/ dry cereal topper. A useful by-product, just not the bar you were looking for.
  2. If you pour out the flax mix too early, it will not set on the plate. If that happens, pour it back into the pan, continue to stir until it curls up like a ball into itself. It is now ready. Pour it out and shape.
