Quinoa milk – Worth it?

Quinoa Milk

During my regular grocery store trip, I came across quinoa milk. Now I am a sucker for all new food products and I jumped at the opportunity to try it. My inside voice, however, was warning me that this might be a bad idea since quinoa has quite a bit of saponins that makes it taste slightly bitter. Cooking the quinoa mellows it out, but milking it may amplify the bitterness. Turns out, my inside voice was right.

Quinoa milk is really bitter. I have quite a high tolerance for eating foods that are healthy, but not that tasty. But trust me, quinoa milk does not make the cut.

Quinoa Nutritional Info

Let us look at the nutrition facts to see if it deserves to be chugged down, bitter or not. Since most plant milks are enriched in the US, it contains added Calcium and Vitamin D. But, given that the protein is only 1g/serving, it does not make a compelling argument to buy it over any other plant based milk.

You are always welcome to satisfy your curiosity and taste it for yourself. The beauty of trying out new foods it that it usually does not dent your wallet as badly as trying on new clothes or accessories. You may also be one of the few people I know, who actually crave bitter taste. Or, it could be an acquired taste, but it certainly is not as subtle as almond milk or soy milk even.

Have you tried quinoa milk? What is your favorite plant based milk? I look forward to your comments below.
